Price differences between shopping in store or online at HMV
Friday, December 11th, 2009I have noticed recently that our local HMV has a significant premium on many of its products when it comes to shopping for them in the store than when shopping online. Many retailers do not have price differences between online or instore but it is apparent that HMV do.
For example this week I saw the album The Whirlwind by Transatlantic for £9.99 and the double CD set was £19.99. Online the price was £8.99 for the single CD, £12.99 for the 2CD digipak and £15.99 for the 2CD & DVD version.
Whichever way you look it is significantly cheaper to buy online. Of course this is just one example but just the other day I was browsing the 2 for £10 offer in the store and found a Bad Company CD I wanted at £6 but couldn’t really find a stand out choice for a second disc so I plumped for an average CD to make the best of the offer but both discs were £4.99 online anyway so I could have saved the last £4 and an additional pound by buying online.
Just today I found myself back in the store and wondered how much the Ghostbusters DVD with both of the films cost in store. I ordered for £4.48 at Amazon earlier in the week so I wondered how much more HMV would be and was astonished that they had £15 marked on the disc. I later looked online and saw it at £5.99 which is a huge discount to the in store price but still significantly behind Amazon.

Another thing that I noticed was that all chart CDs are £9.99 in the store but online at HMV you can get Susan Boyle for £8.99 and it is the same for Leona Lewis, Take That, Queen, Black Eyed Peas and all the other chart music.
If you are a dedicated HMV customer then you can save 11% by buying online or you can buy 10 CDs for each 9 that you buy at the moment.
Next week I will randomly pick 5 DVDs, 5 albums and 5 games and see how HMV in store price compares to their online price and indeed to other online prices. That will be an interesting experiment.
